2010 Competition

The 2010 season has now come to and end, having seen our events grow more successful than ever. For a summary of the results, please see our results page. This year we also held a schools' competition for the first time alongside our final in London, so congratulations to the B Naturals from Guildford School. We also celebrated the end of the season with a showcase at London's Southbank Centre.

We hope you will join us in 2011 for what promises to be another exciting year of events. Check back here in a few months for further details.

VOICE FESTIVAL FORMAT AND EVENTS in 2010:

We held regional rounds in Oxford, Cambridge and St Andrew's during which there was a daytime workshop, an open masterclass for the groups to work on one of their songs with a vocal professional, and an evening competition for university groups. A proportion of the winning groups (depending entry numbers) went through to the London final where there was once again workshops, masterclasses and a competition.

As well as the overall winner(s) in each round, there were other prizeawarded too such as:
- Musicality
- Arrangements
- Performance
- Originality - the Ward Swingle Award for Originality
(NB these are also the judging criteria for the overall winners)

The latter award, endorserd by Ward Swingle himself, took on a new significance this year. Should any group be awarded this prestigious prize they received the chance to win a 'wild card' pass to the final, if they were not already one of the groups going through as winners of the round. This is a really exciting opportunity for a group to strive for! Only one 'wild card' pass can be awarded per year, so if the Ward Swingle Award is won in more than one regional round then video clips of the award-winning groups will be sent to an independent judge who will select which group wins the 'wild card' pass. If the Ward Swingle award is given in the final, the winners will receive a bonus cash prize. We hope that this will inspire groups when planning their 12-minute set - we would really like to encourage entrants to push the boundaries of the a cappella art form and the way they put their show together.

- Download the entry form from here.
- If you have any queries, please contact us.
- The entry fee is the same as last year, £100, and there are instructions on the form as to how to pay. As last year, new groups are eligible for a reduced 'means-tested' fee, so if you are having trouble raising the funds, please get in touch with us to discuss this.
- Entry into the competition also gives you a free open masterclass on the day of the competition, ie. a chance to work on one of your songs with a vocal professional, and reduced fees to the main daytime workshop.
- Entries must be received by Friday December 4th 2009.

POST-SHOW PERFORMANCE:

The Southbank Centre has invited The Voice Festival to come to the freestage in the Royal Festival Hall on the day after the London final in March to showcase some of our best performances of the season. We will therefore be inviting all groups who get through to the final on March 13th to join us for a massed picnic lunch on the Southbank on Sunday lunchtime, followed by performances by all the groups who competed in the final. Friends, fans and family all welcome. We do hope you'll be able to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to bring your music to a much wider audience.

SCHOOLS COMPETITION

We are also aiming to have a schools competition this year to run alongside the university competition, so if you know of any school a cappella groups who would be keen to take part then please pass their contact details so us so that we can explain a bit more about it.
